About the Program
The Virginia-North Carolina Alliance for Minority Participation is part of the Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation, a project funded by the National Science Foundation that promotes the graduation of minorities in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics fields (STEM). The
Alliance includes Virginia institutions: University of Virginia, George Mason University, and Virginia Commonwealth University; and Bennett College, Elizabeth City State University, Johnson C. Smith University and St. Augustine’s College from North Carolina.
VA-NC AMP @ Virginia Tech (VT-AMP)
The Virginia-North Carolina Alliance for Minority Participation @ Virginia Tech (VT-AMP) aims to increase the quality and quantity of students successfully completing science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) baccalaureate degree programs, and increase the number of students interested in, academically qualified for and matriculating into programs of graduate study.
VT-AMP facilitates the achievement of the long-term goal of increasing the number of students who earn doctorates in STEM fields, particularly those from populations underrepresented in STEM fields.

VT-AMP College Transition Program
Select first-year students in STEM majors are invited to participate in VT-AMP, beginning with the AMP College Transition Week prior to the start of fall classes. Transition Week provides VT-AMP students with structured academic programming to facilitate the high school-to-college transition. Transition Week will include a variety of workshops, including: Introduction to Research, the Seminar Series on Academic Success, and Getting to Know Blacksburg. VT-AMP Scholars will receive a $300 stipend for participating in VT-AMP programs and completing a research project with a VT faculty mentor. Structured academic support and research activities continue through the academic year. Application deadline June 1, 2010.


Eligibility Criteria
Students who meet the criteria below are encouraged to apply for admission to VA-NC AMP @ Virginia Tech:
- United States citizen
- Strong academic record
- Interest in attending graduate school
- High School minimum GPA of 3.0
- High School Math and Science minimum GPA of 2.8
- Major in one the STEM fields

VT-AMP Scholars Upper-Classmen
Upperclass students will engage in academic achievement, networking, enrichment, research, and career development activities throughout the academic year.
